You can get everything at Wal-mart

Yesterday I helped a young man in our ward finish making a fishing rod. We have been working on it for months and yesterday we finished it. I have to admit it came out really well. I remember the very first fishing rod I made about 10 years ago. I had no help and learned everything on my own. by the time I was done I put Keralyn's name on it because I was to embarrassed to use it. While we were working on the fishing rod we had 8 people just show up at our house. The young man looked at me puzzled and asked if people just show up at our house all the time. We love our ward and a lot of times people just drop in and bring their entire family and we end up chatting or heating up the grill or playing a game. We kind of enjoy it. When every one left Keralyn and I ran to wal-mart and we decided to get a subway sandwich while we were in wal-mart. Just as I finished my dinner I heard a yell and turned around and saw a young lady fall face first on to the hard tile. Keralyn then said, "Oh that lady is having a seizure." I ran over to her, some other people had already rolled her over, I don't think they thought anything of it. I quickly grabbed her head, did a quick assessment of her airway, she was having a seizure and a lot of times people will salivate copious amounts of mucus and this will plug the airway, this was happening. There was 2 others helping me and I had them roll her on the left side and the saliva started to drain. She resumed breathing. I checked a pulse which was strong. 911 had already been called. With a seizure there is really not much that can be done except to guard the head, but not to tight that the convulsions hurt the neck. A police officer showed up and looked at me and told me he would take over the head position. I did not argue, I mean they got the call, they have first responder training, and it would give me an opportunity to do a secondary assessment. The funny thing is that the policeman is a patient of mine and didn't recognize me. Then the paramedics arrived, and one of them is my a patient of mine also. He didn't recognize me either. And I was still In my work clothes with a big medical symbol on my shirt that said PA. They started their assessment and I was filling them in on the status of the patient: epileptic yell preceding the fall directly to the face, pulse strong with good rhythm, breathing was impeded but returned as patient rolled on left, full myoclonic seizure with residual tachypnea and ataxia, now A&O X3, swelling bridge of nose with epistaxis due to probable nasal fracture, patient on Tegretol for seizure and has had 2 within  the last 30 days. They all looked at me and the one paramedic looked at me kind of cross eyed and then he heard the other two say "well hi Doc, didn't recognize you." The police officer started laughing and said, "and I took her head from you?" It goes to show that when responding to an emergency how focused people can be. The young lady should be fine once the nose heals.

Yeah, I was there. I may not be brave enough to go rushing up to the scene, but I am brave enough to send my husband. I discovered something about myself during the time Mike was helping her, though. I get louder and laugh more when I'm nervous. Mike could tell I was nervous when he came up to me after the lady had been put in the ambulance. I held out my water to him and asked if he wanted a drink. Apparently my hand was shaking. He couldn't figure out what would make me nervous, I mean it's not like I did anything. He understood when I told him that it brought back all the memories of me witnessing his seizure and shock I felt during that event! Freaky!!!!
